With growing population in cities, more and more people live in a home with small or no outdoor areas. Positive or negative development?

As urban populations grow, housing increasingly becomes a question of density, affordability and access rather than the traditional ideal of a spacious home with a private garden. I believe living in homes with small or no outdoor areas is a mostly negative development, although it can be acceptable when cities provide high-quality public space and well-designed housing.
