Today some food travels thousands of miles from the farm to the consumers. What is the reason? Is it a positive or negative trend?

The modern food system allows fruit, meat and packaged products to cross continents before reaching a household table, making distance almost invisible to consumers. This happens because global trade, consumer demand and supply-chain technology have expanded food markets, and I believe the trend is mixed but increasingly problematic when environmental and local economic costs are ignored.
