IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 Sample
The best way to protect the environment is to use local resource, such as food or building materials rather than transporting resources from other places. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

As environmental concerns become more urgent, many people have begun to question the hidden costs of global supply chains. Food, timber, stone, steel, and other materials are often transported across vast distances before reaching consumers, generating carbon emissions and encouraging wasteful patterns of consumption. For this reason, some argue that using local resources is the best way to protect the environment. I agree that local sourcing can make an important contribution, but I do not believe it should be treated as a universal solution. Its effectiveness depends on what is produced locally, how it is produced, and whether alternatives are genuinely more sustainable. The strongest argument for using local resources is that it can reduce transport-related emissions. When food or building materials are sourced nearby, fewer fossil fuels are required for shipping, refrigeration, packaging, and long-distance distribution. Local food systems, for example, can shorten the journey from farm to table, reducing the environmental footprint of consumption. Similarly, using locally available building materials may reduce the need to transport heavy resources over long distances. In addition, local sourcing can strengthen regional economies and encourage consumers to develop a closer awareness of where products come from. However, it would be simplistic to assume that local is always greener. In some cases, producing something locally may require more energy or water than importing it from a region where it can be produced more efficiently. For instance, growing certain fruits in heated greenhouses in a cold climate may generate more emissions than importing them from a warmer country where they grow naturally. Likewise, local building materials may not always be durable, safe, or environmentally friendly if extraction damages forests, rivers, or landscapes. What matters, therefore, is not geographical distance alone, but the overall environmental impact of production, transport, use, and disposal. A more balanced approach would combine local sourcing with broader sustainability standards. Governments and businesses should encourage the use of local resources where they genuinely reduce emissions and environmental damage. At the same time, they should assess products through life-cycle analysis, taking into account energy use, water consumption, pollution, durability, and waste. Consumers should also be encouraged to buy seasonal food, reduce unnecessary consumption, and support producers who follow responsible environmental practices. In conclusion, I agree that using local resources can be an effective way to protect the environment, especially when it reduces transport emissions and supports sustainable production. Nevertheless, it is not always the best solution. Environmental protection requires a more comprehensive approach that considers the full ecological cost of what we consume, not merely where it comes from.
