Crime is often discussed as if it were either a purely moral failure or an inevitable product of deprivation. In reality, criminal behaviour usually emerges from a more complicated interaction between social conditions and personal choice. While I accept that some individuals display unusually harmful tendencies, I believe most crime is better explained by circumstances such as poverty, family breakdown, weak education, and social exclusion.
