Some students take one year off between finishing school and going to university, in order to travel or to work. Do you think advantages outweigh disadvantages?

Taking a year off before university has become increasingly common as young people seek work experience, travel, or time to make better educational choices. I believe the advantages usually outweigh the disadvantages, provided the year is planned with clear purposes rather than treated as an extended holiday without direction.
