Mathematics is often described as a fundamental subject, yet many schoolchildren develop a strong dislike for it. This dislike is not simply a matter of laziness or lack of intelligence. In many cases, it results from negative classroom experiences, fear of failure, and a failure to see the relevance of mathematical thinking. To help children enjoy mathematics, schools need to change not only what is taught, but also how the subject is experienced. One major reason children dislike math is that it is often taught as a series of procedures to be memorized rather than as a way of thinking. Students are told to follow formulas, apply rules, and produce correct answers, but they may not understand why the methods work or how they relate to real problems. Once they fall behind, even slightly, later topics become increasingly difficult because mathematical knowledge is cumulative. A child who never fully understands fractions, for instance, may later struggle with ratios, algebra, and equations. This creates a cycle in which confusion leads to anxiety, and anxiety leads to avoidance. Another reason is the emotional pressure associated with math. Unlike subjects where partial interpretation may be accepted, mathematics often appears to offer only right or wrong answers. Timed tests, public correction, and comparison with faster classmates can make weaker students feel exposed and embarrassed. Over time, they may begin to believe that they are simply “not math people”. This fixed mindset is particularly damaging because it turns temporary difficulty into a permanent identity. To address these problems, teachers should make mathematics more conceptual, visual, and connected to everyday life. Instead of presenting formulas first, they can begin with puzzles, patterns, games, physical objects, or real-world situations involving money, design, sports, maps, or technology. When students see that math is used to plan a journey, build a bridge, create a video game, or understand statistics, the subject becomes less abstract and more meaningful. Visual tools and step-by-step modelling can also help students understand the logic behind procedures rather than merely memorizing them. Equally important is creating a classroom culture in which mistakes are treated as part of learning. Teachers should praise reasoning, persistence, and improvement rather than only speed and accuracy. Group tasks, low-pressure quizzes, and differentiated practice can allow students to build confidence gradually. For children who have already developed math anxiety, early intervention and patient feedback are essential. In conclusion, many children dislike math because they experience it as confusing, abstract, and emotionally threatening. The best way to change this is to make mathematics more understandable, relevant, and psychologically safe. When students are allowed to explore, make mistakes, and see the purpose behind what they learn, math can become not a source of fear, but a form of intellectual confidence.
