In modern states, taxation is the most visible way in which citizens contribute to the collective good. Roads, hospitals, schools, courts, and public safety all depend on people paying a share of their income to the government. Yet the responsibilities of citizenship cannot be reduced to financial payment alone. While paying taxes is essential, I believe individuals also have wider moral and civic duties within society.
