In an age of sensational headlines and endless online commentary, news can appear distant from ordinary routines even while public events continue to shape those routines. I disagree that news is a waste of time, because reliable journalism connects people to economic, political and social forces that affect their lives, although careless consumption of low-quality news can be harmful.
