Punishment is one of the most difficult responsibilities of a legal system because it must balance justice, deterrence, rehabilitation, and public safety. Some people believe that all lawbreakers should be sent to prison, while others argue that alternatives such as community service are often better. In my view, prison is necessary for serious offenders, but using it for every offence is neither fair nor effective.
