Education has always carried a double burden: it must prepare people to live among others, yet it must also help individuals discover what kind of life they wish to lead. Some argue that its main purpose is to make people useful members of society, while others see it primarily as a route to personal ambition. In my view, these aims should not be treated as opposites, since a genuinely educated person is usually one whose personal development enables meaningful social contribution.
