Education systems face a persistent tension between breadth and specialization. Some believe teenagers should study a wide range of subjects so that they become well-rounded individuals, while others argue that young people should focus on the areas in which they show the greatest talent or interest. In my view, teenagers need a broad foundation, but they should also be allowed increasing room for specialization as they mature.
