Some people believe that parents should take punishments for the crime of their children. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

When children commit crimes, society naturally asks whether parents failed in their duty to guide and supervise them. I disagree that parents should generally be punished for their children's crimes, although they should be held responsible when clear neglect, abuse, or deliberate encouragement contributed to the offence.
