In a marketplace where consumers are surrounded by sponsored posts, comparison websites and user reviews, advertising no longer enjoys the one-way authority it once had. This decline is mainly caused by information abundance, media literacy and distrust of commercial claims, and I regard it as broadly positive because it pushes companies toward transparency, although it may also encourage more disguised forms of persuasion.
