Many people think modern communication technology is having some negative effects on social relationships. Do you agree or disagree?

Modern communication technology has transformed the way people maintain relationships. Messages can be sent instantly, video calls can connect families across continents, and social media allows people to remain aware of one another’s lives with minimal effort. Yet the convenience of these tools has also raised a deeper concern: whether constant digital connection is weakening the quality of human relationships. I partly agree with this view. Communication technology can sustain relationships across distance, but when it replaces rather than supports genuine interaction, its effects can be socially harmful. The most obvious benefit of modern communication technology is that it overcomes physical separation. Migrant workers, international students, and families living in different countries can use video calls, voice messages, and social media to preserve emotional bonds that might otherwise fade. In the past, distance often meant long periods of silence; today, people can share daily experiences in real time. This is particularly valuable for elderly parents, long-distance couples, and people whose work requires frequent travel. In this respect, technology can deepen relationships by making communication more frequent and accessible. However, frequency should not be confused with intimacy. Digital communication often encourages brief, fragmented, and superficial exchanges. Many people now maintain relationships through likes, emojis, short replies, and forwarded content, which may create the appearance of connection without meaningful conversation. Even when people meet in person, mobile phones can distract them from the people physically present. A dinner table at which everyone is checking messages illustrates a broader social problem: technology allows people to be connected elsewhere while emotionally absent from the moment they are actually sharing. Social media can also distort relationships by encouraging comparison, performance, and self-presentation. Instead of revealing ordinary life honestly, people often display carefully edited versions of success, beauty, travel, or happiness. This can generate envy, insecurity, and misunderstanding among friends. Moreover, online communication sometimes reduces empathy, as people are more willing to make harsh comments behind a screen than they would in face-to-face conversation. The absence of tone, facial expression, and immediate emotional feedback can make conflict easier to create and harder to resolve. In conclusion, I do not believe modern communication technology is inherently damaging. Used wisely, it can maintain relationships that distance would otherwise weaken. Nevertheless, I agree that it has negative effects when it replaces deep conversation, encourages constant distraction, or turns social life into a performance. The real challenge is not to reject technology, but to ensure that it remains a tool for human connection rather than a substitute for it.
