Many developing countries are currently expanding their tourist industries. Why is this the case? Is it a positive development?

For many developing countries, tourism appears to offer a faster route to foreign income than manufacturing or high-tech industry, especially when they possess beaches, wildlife, historical sites or distinctive cultural traditions. This expansion is driven by economic necessity and global mobility, and I believe it can be positive if governments prevent environmental damage, cultural commodification and overdependence on visitors.
