Food waste has become a serious contradiction in affluent societies, where supermarkets and restaurants discard edible products while many households elsewhere still face food insecurity. The main reasons are over-purchasing, cosmetic retail standards and weak incentives to reuse surplus food, and the problem should be addressed through consumer education, better regulation and redistribution systems.
