Some cities allow new homes and office buildings to be designed with considerable freedom, reflecting the belief that owners and architects should shape the urban landscape creatively. I believe the disadvantages of weak design control outweigh the advantages, although planning rules should encourage variety rather than impose lifeless uniformity.
