In many countries, women are allowed to take maternity leave from their jobs during the first month after the birth of their babies. Do advantages outweigh disadvantages?

Maternity leave recognizes that childbirth and early infant care create physical, emotional and practical demands that employment systems must accommodate. I believe the advantages of maternity leave clearly outweigh the disadvantages, although the policy should be designed so that it does not unfairly damage women career prospects or burden employers.
