In many countries women are allowed to take maternity leave from their jobs during the first month after the birth of their baby. Does advantage outweigh disadvantages?

The first months after childbirth are physically demanding and emotionally important, so many countries require employers to provide maternity leave. I believe the advantages of this policy clearly outweigh its disadvantages, although it should be designed in a way that protects women without discouraging employers from hiring them.
