Education is often judged by its ability to prepare students for employment, which is why mathematics, science and languages tend to dominate school timetables. Yet children also need imagination, emotional awareness and visual literacy. I agree that art classes such as painting and drawing are important for development, but I would support making them compulsory only if they are taught in a flexible and meaningful way.
