An increasing number of developing countries are expanding their tourist industries. Why is this the case? Is it a positive or negative development?

For many developing countries, tourism appears to offer something rare: a path to economic growth that does not require heavy industrialisation or advanced technological infrastructure. Beaches, historic sites, wildlife, food culture, religious traditions, and distinctive landscapes can all become sources of income in the global travel economy. This explains why many governments are expanding their tourist industries. Overall, I believe this is a positive development, provided that tourism is managed sustainably and local communities receive a fair share of the benefits.
