Ambition is a positive quality for people to have in many societies today. How important is it for people who want to succeed in life? Is it a positive or negative characteristic?

In competitive societies, ambition is often treated as a necessary ingredient of success. People are encouraged to set high goals, improve themselves, and pursue better careers, higher incomes, or greater social influence. While ambition can become harmful when it turns into selfishness or obsession, I believe it is generally an important and positive quality, provided it is guided by ethical values and a realistic sense of purpose.
